Multidisciplinary, Interdisciplinary, and Transdisciplinary (MIT) Learning Approach and Strategy Based on Indonesian National Qualification Framework (KKNI) Curriculum

ABSTRACT

Inadequate understanding and different perspectives of Islamic higher education (PTKIN) in Indonesia particularly the graduate schools towards Multidisciplinary, Interdisciplinary, and Transdisciplinary (MIT) approaches result in ineffective implementation of Indonesian National Qualification Framework/Kerangka Kualifikasi Nasional Indonesia (KKNI) curriculum. Yet, MIT approach is highly needed to accelerate state development. MIT study has integrated character which opens to new developments of science and methodology and will possibly create new knowledge hybrids. This research investigated MIT learning strategy and approach at graduate schools of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, and UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The policy of MIT learning aims to enable the learning process at graduate schools to produce new comprehensive discoveries on science and humanities. Based on a qualitative research method, this showed that the graduate schools had different MIT approach and strategy in learning and this was greatly influenced by lecturer’s and decision maker’s paradigms. MIT approach was chosen respond to the nature of science, realize very complex issues, synergize various disciplines of sciences, motivate multi-sector expert collaboration, and produce new products. In short, MIT practices mean collaboration and synergy among involving people either experts with non-experts or academic with non-academic staff.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF ISLAMIC HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN SOUTHEAST SULAWESI OF INDONESIA: INCREASING COMPETITIVENESS THROUGH SWOT ANALYSIS

 

ABSTRACT:

The development of higher education institutions is very crucial to be done to maintain its existence. That is because changes always continue to occur so that higher education institutions are required to make developments oriented to improving the quality of institutional governance. The main purpose of this article is to describe and analyze the external and internal environment as the basis for the direction or orientation of development by the leadership of the institution in maintaining the existence of the institution through increasing the competitiveness of the institution. The research data was obtained through data collection on various issues that were considered crucial (critical issues) related to the existence of the Kendari State Islamic Institute (IAIN Kendari) located in Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The data obtained were then analyzed using the SWOT analysis technique using Evans theory through weighting the EFAS and IFAS analyzes. The results of this study indicate that the development of Islamic tertiary institutions through the use of SWOT analysis is very important to do to maintain their existence in the form of increasing the competitiveness of higher education institutions in Indonesia.

Strategic Planning Model of Islamic Religious Higher Education (PTKI) in Indonesia

Abstract Strategic planning for higher education is vital because it becomes a reference in determining the direction of policy and organizational performance. To win the competition in gaining the market, strategic planning activities become the spearhead in determining the strategy to achieve the appropriate institutional goals. However, the implementation of strategic planning at Islamic Religious Higher Education (PTKI) is often constrained because of the lack of understanding of the importance of these theories, so the implementation of strategic planning is often only intended for administrative requirements. Amid this condition, there is a phenomenon where some PTKIs are developing rapidly and transforming to be more market-oriented and to win the competition. These PTKIs are UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, IAIN Tulungagung, Muhammadiyah University of Malang,and Malang Islamic University. They have succeeded in creating effective strategies in organizational development until now they can become modern institutions and develop into multi-level organizations. The purpose of this study is to explore the five PTKI strategy models in Indonesia at the corporate and business unit levels based on Fred R. David’s corporate-level strategy models,and Porter’s generic strategy model theory Data were collected by qualitative methods through observation, interview,and documentation techniques. The results showed that at the corporate level, Fred R. David’s strategy models applied by PTKI were vertical integration strategy, intensive strategy, and diversification strategy. In the defensive strategy, what is more,applied is the retrenchment strategy choice. However, at the business unit level, Porter’s well-implemented strategy models are the cost leadership strategy, differentiation strategy, and focus strategy. These results have implications  for  the  selection  of  business  strategy  models  to  be  used  in  either  profit-oriented or non-profit strategic planning activities in PTKI.

Religious Teacher Performance: Revitalization of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) Teachers As Innovators

Abstract

IRE teachers are the spearhead of success in learning religious education at schools. Curriculum changes will not have much impact on the quality of learning, if the quality of teachers is not improved. The strategy taken is to improve the performance and quality work of teachers, because the function of teachers are not only as an educator and facilitator, but also acts as an innovator in education. Innovators are not only means “changing” but also presents something that is really new and able to make the old things become new existence in context to the present. So innovative teachers are required and have a good performance, not only physically but also responsibility and performance, so as to improve the quality of education and special learning in Islamic religious education. The main performance of teachers from the physical aspects such as appearance and fashion, but far more important is competence in the mastery of learning materials, the ability of managing the class, the authority as education, social interaction and exemplary both at school and in the community. IRE teachers with good performance will not only able to inspire for learners, and even will be able to produce renewal in IRE.

WORKPLACE SPIRITUALITY TO INCREASE INSTITUTIONS’ COMMITMENT AND MEANING OF LIFE

Abstract

The low commitment and meaning of life can be caused by many, but they potentially occur because people in an institution do not know what they get from their work other than just money; people become unhappy with their work, then get bored and uncomfortable at work, apathetic, and ultimately unproductive. An institution that implements workplace spirituality (WS) will make people feel connected and meaningful at work. The purpose of this study is to explain how the values of WS can increase staff’s commitment and meaning of life at the institutions. The results of this study indicate that the WS can increase the commitment and meaning of the life of employees in the institution’s through several things. First, the value which can increase work commitment is value of togetherness, responsibility, justice, trust, sincerity, integrity, innovative, and professional. Second, the meaning of work for them is a moral call, a form of gratitude, fulfillment, worship, self-actualization, the command of Allahswt, and doing the main duty. Third, the efforts made by the staff are: to build a working atmosphere with workplace culture and climate, improve the quality of institutions by making research and recruiting qualified lecturers,conducting useful activities, adding infrastructure to support activities, friendly communication, social media as means of socialization, religious or coaching and motivation training, oblige Zuhur prayers in congregation, and cooperate with others. Fourth, the impact of workplace spirituality for employees is to feel proud of their institution, to feel comfortable and to have intimacy, to have well self-actualization, to be more productive in their work, to maintain altitude, leadership that refers to the pattern of politics alone will decrease the quality of the institution, mutual visit and sharing information or giving advise, positive activities coloring each institution, and adding enthusiasm to work.

Kajian dalam buku ini diawali dengan fenomena yang akhir-akhir ini muncul, yakni kerja berbasis finger print (sidik jari). Model ini berkembang tidak hanya di dunia industri tetapi juga bagi ASN (Aparat Sipil Negara)/Pagawa Negeri Sipil (PNS). Workplace Spirituality bukan hanya hal yang terkait dengan hubungan manusia dengan Tuhan, tetapi nilai spiritualitas itulah yang melandasi orang bekerja. Dalam konteks bekerja orang seringkali kehilangan maknanya selain hanya mendapatkan uang (money) dan keuntungan, maka penting sekali bagi seorang pekerja menemukan makna hidup yang hakiki dari pekerjaannya itu, sehingga muncul sikap senang, bahagia, jujur, disiplin dan bertanggung jawab. Maka bekerja itu harus jujur, ikhlas sebagai perwujudan dari spiritualitas yg ada dalam dirinya.
